Baby Is Born Covered In Thick White Scales. 5 Years Later, Doctor Has Never Seen A Face Like His

Two days before he was born, Evan Fasciano’s parents learned of his devastating diagnosis. Because of his condition, Evan was delivered nine weeks early and didn’t leave the hospital for months.

Upon his birth, De De and Joe saw a little boy who looked nothing like a “normal” baby. That’s because Evan was born with a severe case of Harlequin ichthyosis, a genetic disorder that left him with hard, thick, white and scaly skin.

Now 5 years old, Evan’s skin grows at 10 times the normal rate. He’s constantly at risk of infection, dehydration and sunstroke.

De De has dedicated herself to educating others about Harlequin ichthyosis, of which there is currently no cure. She has also dedicated herself to caring for Evan, who requires two baths every single day in order to scrub off his excess skin and the “scales” that build up so quickly on his body.

You’d think Evan would be frightened of the world around him, or too intimidated to face the public — but on the contrary. He is a happy and outgoing child who has many friends at his school in Connecticut.

Thanks to his family, Evan is blessed with a positive outlook on life and tons of support from his classmates and teachers. And even when strangers stare at him, Evan has learned to smile and say hello. Amazing.
